How to Create a Manageable Marketing Strategy For Your New Business with Katlynn Pyatt

Welcome to episode 130 The Determined Mom Show. I am your host, Amanda Tento. Our special guest today is Katlynn Pyatt. She is the founder of Authentic Branding and Marketing. We’re very excited to have you here and today we are going to be talking about how to create a manageable marketing strategy for your new business but before we get there, I would love for you to tell the audience all about you and how you got started in branding.

For sure, so I have worked in advertising and marketing for probably 13 years now and it was my major in college. I got started in my business because I was working at a financial institution, a local one and just sort of had this epiphany that I had kind of outgrown my time in that role.

I had been there for several years and was kind of thinking about like, what do I want to do next? I was driving into work one day and I had this epiphany, as I was listening to a podcast and I thought this cannot be how I live my life forever until I retire.

I don’t want to be rushing out of the house every morning and throwing my kids out the car door to school and then pouring myself out all day long at an organization, no matter how much I love it.

You know, I worked for a great boss. I had a great team. I liked the projects I was doing, which was fine but it’s not amazing. If I’m going to do this every day, I just want it to feel amazing and so I decided to start my own business and kind of worked for about a year to build it before I started it in January 2020, which did not go the way that anyone planned.

So that’s kind of what led me to where I am. I thought when I thought about my business and what I wanted to do, I would often hear when I was networking through my corporate job with small business owners, they would say they don’t do marketing because they don’t know how to do it themselves.

I thought, well, you know, I work in marketing management and my whole job is managing projects and timelines and creating strategic marketing plans to meet business goals and I thought I can teach them.

I can show them how to create a manageable marketing plan and how to make educated decisions about what strategies are the best for them. That way, they don’t feel like they’re wasting their time or their money when it comes to marketing and so that was kind of the genesis of Authentic Branding and Marketing.

I love it and that is such a recurring theme. If you listen back to all of the episodes and you hear how all of our guests got started, it’s just that feeling of constantly running in a hamster wheel and then overcoming that. So let’s go ahead and talk about how we can create a manageable marketing strategy.

Sure, so I can see where everyone feels like the social media aspect of the business is kind of like the biggest elephant in the room and everybody knows they need to be doing it. They don’t like doing it and I am not any different than anyone else when it comes to social media because it’s not where I love to spend my time and my energy.

You know, I did it for a long time and then I got to the point where I outsourced it and that’s something that I’m very fortunate to be able to do. Why? Here’s the thing about content and social media. It’s a full-time job.

I know that’s difficult to start a business. Social media is the first stop because it’s free and the thing about it though, is that it takes a long time to build an organic following, right?

Some people have success and go viral but that’s a total fluke. There’s no formula for going viral. If there was, everybody would do it and we’d all be golden. What I always teach my clients is that when you’re building a manageable marketing strategy, you first need to play to your strengths.

So if you don’t love being on social media, if it drains your energy, do kind of the minimum to make sure that you’re presenting yourself in a professional way that you are out there and you have a presence but don’t sink all of your time and energy into it, because it’s just going to sap it from all of the things that you do need to get done.

So if you don’t have time to be creating a reel every single day and writing a blog or doing a video, don’t stress yourself out by committing to that, commit to what you can and have the capacity to do.

That’s kind of where I start and then the biggest point that I make is that a successful marketing strategy or a successful plan is well-rounded. You’re not going to put all of your eggs in one basket anyway, right?

You do need to have multiple channels that your audience can find you in because marketing is ultimately the sum of multiple touch points that a potential client or customer has with you.

Social media shouldn’t be the only place you’re building a presence anyway and there are plenty of other strategies and ways that you can get yourself out there and be visible that don’t rely on the algorithms of Facebook and Instagram or Tik TOK, especially if that’s not where you love to be.

So that’s kind of the first thing that I kind of educate people on is that you just need to play to your strengths and look at what you can do. That’s gonna make you feel successful and take some of the overwhelming stress out of marketing.

Yeah. So I know you have a course that kind of walks everyone through these marketing fundamentals. So tell us a little bit about that.

So I have a course, it’s about two and a half hours long and it takes you in-depth on how to do each of the steps of creating a strategic marketing plan that is customized to you. So when I talk about identifying that 3 to 5-year business goal and creating a smart goal for the next 12 months, identifying your ideal client customer, all of those things I walk you through in detail and I show you how you do it.

Then we start to put those pieces together. So by the end of this course, which it’s only two and a half hours long, you walk away with a 12-month plan for the next 3 to 5 years. The other half of having a marketing plan is executing your marketing plan and knowing how you’re going to make progress toward it.

So I also teach you how to plug it into any project management tool of your choice. Mine is Trello so that you can make measurable and actionable progress toward it daily.

I love that and it’s very important when you’re beginning to be able to balance all of the things like client work and doing things like taking the marketing course and kind of developing that strategy for yourself and your business

I love that you’ve made it something that people can balance out and including those coaching sessions is amazing as well. Well, thank you so much Katlynn for being here. To our readers and listeners, have a great week.
